 
Mascouche, Quebec was selected as the location for the first joint
venture project of SmartCentres and Wal-Mart in Quebec. Located North-East
of Montreal, the town's powerful growth of the population and local
economy were key in the decision to bring a major commercial centre,
anchored by Wal-Mart, to the community. The project was realized with
the acquisition of 37.45 acres of land at the crossroads of Highway
25 and 640 along Montée Masson.
Once Wal-Mart officially opened in 1999, the project rapidly drew
numerous tenants interested in investing in a booming market. The
area located around the centre is already seeing the positive impact.
Montée Masson has been transformed from an under- developed
regional road to a major commercial artery with numerous new private
projects. The SmartCentres and Wal-Mart Centre will be fully developed
by early 2002 and the project has been met with resounding support
from the tenants, the community and its residents.
